By what right?

I marvel at the number of people who believe they have a claim on me simply because they want something they do not have.  I know that sounds selfish, but you know what?  I do not care.

Ask my friends and family, I am a generous guy – almost to the point of personal bankruptcy.  I give to those I choose to give to because I want to – not because they expect it – and not because I expect anything in return.  So how did it come to this?

I think that everyone can agree that each person has the right to life.  However, that has not always been the case.  Prior to the Declaration of Independence, a person’s rights have traditionally been in service to a higher authority.  Whether it was in service to a warlord or a king, the fact was that until the late 1700s people were subjects – subject to the whims of those who claimed to be worthy by virtue of strength or a “divine right”.  Back then, we largely lived by the rule of man as opposed to the rule of law, and it seems we are reverting to that unhappy state of being.  We have a government that sells influence to the highest bidder – but that’s a story for another day.

What does the “rule of man” lead to?  The simple answer is that the subject life is property of the state, as embodied by the man doing the ruling.  Prime examples from the 20th century include the USSR (Stalin’s purges), China (Mao’s Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution), and, of course, Nazi Germany (Hitler’s Holocaust).  While the whole world was shocked and dismayed at the atrocities of Hitler, it seems that the expiration date for “never again” is about 50 years – just look at the desires of the Islamists when it comes to the destruction of Israel.  It is a puzzlement that although Hitler was responsible for the deaths of approximately 6 million, Stalin and Mao were responsible for somewhere north of 100 million and are still praised.

If we assume that each person has an inherent right to life, then it follows that he also has an expectation to live that life as he chooses.  This means that he can pursue any profession he desires and enjoy the fruits of his labor.  Except, the state makes a demand on each person in the form of taxes.

Now, taxes are not necessarily evil – they have evolved into an evil.  Let me explain.  The theory of the American Experiment is that the state is subservient to the people.  There are some legitimate functions of the government which must be paid for; these include common defense, maintenance of order, and coining of a common currency.  In fact, property rights were so important to the founders, they were explicitly embodied in the Bill of Rights in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th amendments (more on that in a later post).

From 1789 until the US Civil War, there was no personal income tax in America.  All functions of government were covered by import duties.  After the Civil War, the income tax was abolished until 1913 with the ratification of the 16th amendment.  He beast was born.  The entire text of the 16th amendment is:

“The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.”

Nowhere does it state by what right the Congress may appropriate a part of a person’s life.  “What”, you say, “does the laying of taxes on incomes have to do with appropriation of one’s life?”

You are given only one life, and it only lasts so long.  When you tax the income one earns, you are appropriating a portion of someone’s life, because that person had to spend some of his life to pay his taxes.

The double edge of this abomination is that it only affects the people who work.  Those who do not work do not need to pay, or spend part of their life to support the government.  When enough people who do not work are given the right to vote, they will invariably vote to keep the productive paying while enjoying the benefits flowing from them via the government.

“Energy policy? We don’t need no stinking energy policy”

Nice to see that an “all of the above” energy plan is now being put into place.  It seems that “all” has been redefined to exclude drilling for shale oil on federal lands, coal, or in some places, hydrofracking.

To the idiots that voted for Obama, I hope you all freeze in the dark.

Parts of New York City are no Better than a Third-World Country

amid reports of the President of the US playing golf.  Coming up to the 2 week mark, and the national media seems to simply ignore the fiasco.  Well, it’s not like they have to travel very far, seeing that Times Square is only a stone’s throw from some of the most devastated places in the financial capital of the world.

Reports of people having to travel SIX miles to find food.

And Doctors without Borders has set up shop in New York City as if it were the Sudan.

Yet these people voted for Obama.  And will continue to vote Democrat.  Some people never learn.

Don’t expect me to pay for the knife you would slit my throat with

It has been almost two weeks since hurricane Sandy made landfall in New Jersey.  For those of you who can do simple math, that was before the election that gave us another 4 years of the government crushing the middle class.  So how did this “black swan” event turn out so positive for a president who has so far been a failure?

Let’s recall that the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast had about a week to prepare.  That meant that FEMA also had a week to prepare.  As of yesterday, there are still more than 150,000 residents of the affected areas without power, and might not be restored for another few weeks.  Why has there been little to no widespread reporting of these facts?

It is not difficult to see that the MSM is appearing to cover for President Obama.  Why?  Is this the one event he cannot blame on Bush?

However, I have given up ascribing motives to the too-cozy relationship between the Democrats with Bylines and the Democrat party.  I do what I can.  And what I can do is precisely NOTHING.

Absolutely nothing.  All one has to do is to look at the most recent electoral map and see how the affected residents voted in this past election.  And they voted for the warm embrace of Obama and the Democrat party.

These people chose to rely on big government, so as far as I am concerned, big government can take care of them.  Don’t bother to ask me for contributions, as the fools in NY and NJ decided to rely on FEMA and promises of Obama to care for them.  That does not mean that I will not help out a family member, but organized charities such as the Red Cross and the like are out of the loop.  Especially when you hear stories like this.

The basic calculus is quite simple: they voted to make me a serf, they can go to hell.

Curious Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds

The election of Barack Obama in 2008 was not the Beginning of the End of the American experiment.  His subsequent reelection this past week only continues the trip down the Road to Serfdom.  Most people do not quite understand what a serf is – a person tied to the land in the service of a member of the nobility.  Not quite a slave and not quite a free man.  Serfdom is the state where a person is given permission to exist.  Think about that – the right of existence is not a fundamental right of personhood.

I lived and worked in China for a year.  People there were subjects (subject to the power of the state).  I was born and raised in the US, and did not fully appreciate the freedom I had until one day at the Shanghai airport when I was standing on a line to PROVE to an official that I actually had a right to leave the country.  That was in addition to having to prove I had a right to enter the country in the first place.  I can fully understand having to prove I had permission to enter; I was a guest in their country.

Why anyone would volunteer for that kind of existence is unbelievable.  Why anyone would make that choice for another human is an evil that is beyond comprehension.  Yet, over 50 million US citizens were willing to make precisely that choice for the rest of the population.  It has been said that the devil’s best trick is to persuade you that he doesn’t exist.  The leftist’s greatest trick is that he has your best interests at heart.

Over the course of this project, I fully intend to explain the flaws in the leftist theories.  I welcome honest debate, although by their very nature leftists are not capable of honesty.  Their whole philosophy is based on deceit, misdirection, and non-sequitor.

But remember, “Going Galt” is an active endeavor.
